How Travel Can Help You Become More Employable

Its bound to happen. When you travel you are quite likely to change in more ways than one. Mentally, physically, emotionally. You are exposed to so many new environments and situations that it would be hard not to change, and these skills are exactly what employers look for in their employees.
The main skill sets that travelling can offer you are:
1. Social Skills
Whilst travelling on your own or with someone you learn to either become more introvert or force yourself to be extrovert. You want to make friends and fight off that loneliness and so you strike up conversations with people you never usually would have, breaking down those barriers and making new friends.
By doing this you become more comfortable talking to strangers and meeting new people expanding your friendships and the way you to talk to people when you have never met them before.
2. Conversation
Linking with the above, travel not only makes you comfortable talking to strangers, it makes you better at it too. As you can imagine you start to ask the same questions, who are they, where are they from, where are they going, etc which can get quite boring after a while. You want to really know the person you’re talking to so you start to adapt your questions and the way you ask them. You’re becoming a conversationalist – another new skill set to add to your belt.
3. Confidence
So you are either new to travelling or have been at it for a while. Its safe to say your confidence will soar with everything you achieve, especially those things you never thought you would be able to. After each accomplishment its only right that your confidence gets a boost and you’re ability to achieve anything will become set at the forefront of your mind.
4. Adaptable
You’ve dealt with missed flights, slow buses, wrong turns, delays, bad street food, and much, much more. After a while, you learn how to adapt your plans to changing situations. You don’t get mad, you don’t get angry, you just alter what you are doing and move on. Life throws you curve balls and you hit them out of the park. Why? Because you’re awesome like that.
5. Adventurous
Once all of the above have started to kick in then you will be willing to do almost anything. You will want to try new things, push yourself further out of your comfort zone, have new experiences and laugh at those who said you could never do it. Once you realise you can, there will be nothing to stop you. Wanna jump off a bridge attached by a bungy cord? Sure! Wanna jump out of a plane at 16,000ft? Why not! Want to go caving and climb some underground waterfalls? Hell yeah I do!
6. Level Headedness
Travelling can break you at the best of times. Will make you want to cry or become so angry. But all those mistakes help you they make you become so much more easy going. You become a lot calmer, you work and think better under pressure. You no longer freak out and instead look to see how you can fix it. There’s no need for stress and travelling teaches you that.
7. Intelligence
It comes hand in hand. Travelling will make you smarter and it will teach you the way of the world. You will learn about people, history, culture and arcane facts about places only some people can dream of. Your common sense will rocket through the roof (which a lot of people seem to lack). You will learn to navigate, to multitask, to understand and possibly speak new languages and understand human behavior.
8. Less Materialistic
On the road, you learn just how little stuff you actually need. You’ll realise that all the useless stuff they sell in the shopping centres and shops are pretty useless in leading a truly happy life. Coming home, you’ll find yourself a minimalist simply because you realise and understand what you need to live and what you don’t. As they say, the more you own, the more it owns you.
9. Happiness
Lets face it…travelling makes you happier. You’re happy when you book it, you’re happy when you think about it, you’re happy when you see it, you’re happy when you live and experience it and you’re happy when continue your adventures into the future.
It simply teaches you how to be happy with yourself and life. You will become more relaxed, confident, intelligent and the world becomes a brighter place. Its hard to not be happy. You’ve become an outgoing, funny, social, happy, confident, and smart person which are all qualities that make people more successful in everyday life.
Travel makes you a better person. When you learn more about the world and the people in it, push your boundaries, and try new things, you become a more open, outgoing, and awesome person. All the people I’ve known who have traveled are better people because of it. With all the ways a trip can make you more of an awesome person, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be planning your next adventure now – whether it’s around the world or just a short two-week holiday to St Lucia.
All of these skills add up and become invaluable to an employer in any career you chose.
Be sure to let your employer become aware of these skills and you should have no trouble at all when you add it to your previous skills and experience within the working world.
