TRAVEL FOR EVERYONE

These days, it is quite common to think of travelling as something you do in far and exotic lands, miles away from the comforts of home. Its the thought of spending what seems like days on flights to land in a destination unknown, where you don’t understand the language, the money looks fake, the weather has dramatically changed and the sights and smells are totally unfamiliar.
Travel is exotic – but is it?
To some degree that version of travelling is very true, but it’s not the only form of travel that we can experience personally. Its the act of going somewhere new, unexplored and away from home. This means that it could be a new town or city, county or state or anywhere in your home country.
For some it could even be their own home town. Can you honestly say you have explored everywhere you live?
Anywhere can be a travel destination
It’s not uncommon for people to tell me that I have seen more of their country than they have and that they wished they had ‘the time and money‘ to do it. I think that’s such a cop out term. If you really wanted to explore you would just go and do it like me. Every weekend I try and explore somewhere new, even if its just a few hours away from where I’m living.
Its a new adventure!
However, I must admit that I am just guilty. I can’t honestly say that I have explored my own country (the UK) as much as I could have done, and in time I will rectify this.
A stranger in your own country
There’s something special about being a stranger in your homeland and realising you really don’t know much about it as you thought. If you dig deeper into its history you will start to uncover a lot more than you realised existed and to be honest its so fascinating.
If you have a car this is obviously a great way to explore more, hop in one weekend with some friends or your partner and off you go. Pick somewhere random on the map and head there. Or have a search online or Instagram and see what’s near to you that you have never seen before.
Food for thought
If you’re on a limited budget, can’t afford a flight or a trip to exotic land, or just want to do something different, don’t forget that you can always travel your own country. It can be just as powerful as visiting another country.
